įirstly, I now have the Mac Mini back at my desk with the Thunderbolt port feeding my 24" monitor via DVI. I have, however, continued my experimenting. Well, a good few weeks has passed since I posted anything to this thread - and Christmas got in the way a little. I'm sure I'll keep fiddling over the weekend - might try Plex too to see if that improves things.

I walk past a Maplins on my way home from work, so will try that on Monday - but wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this problem ? My thoughts so far are either a problem with the soundcard (is very old, and there is no soundblaster driver for Mac for it) or possibly an XBMC software problem ? I guess the next real test is using the 3.5mm to Toslink adaptor. It's a different type of noise for both DD5.1 and DTS (maybe beans for DD5.1, and cabbage for DTS ) As soon as I tried DD5.1 or DTS I get the same farting noise I had with the HDMI through the TV. All was well with those recorded on my DVD recorder (only AC3 stereo). Tried to play a few ripped DVD files (ISOs).

HD is lovely - even 1080p stuff, though admittedly there's no BluRay rips, just YouTube content, etc.

DVI TO HDMI NOT WORKING MAC MINI G4 TV HOW TO
After much faffing (and reading online messages) I found how to get 5.1 out of the thing (Audio Midi Setup) and got the coax SPDIF out of it plugged into my AV amp. I haven't yet got one of the 3.5mm-Optical adaptors, so to prove the theory I grabbed my trusty old USB Soundblaster Audigy NX2. Strange "farting" noises and unhappy Mac. As above, I had trouble with DD5.1 and DTS when plugged into the TV via HDMI.

So, I thought I'd do some more testing with my new (ish - July 2011) Mac Mini. Looks like it will remain a paperweight for the moment. Works fine for SD, but HD stutters and falls over much like the old XBOX does. įirstly, the old G4 isn't up to it - you are correct. It's Friday night, so rather than spend time relaxing with the family (oxymoron ?!) I thought I'd do some experimenting. Thanks for any help or advice you can offer, Sorry for the long rambling message, but Macs are kinda expensive to be finding out the hard way ! If I have to get a seperate Mac Mini for HTPC purposes (leaving my current one for general desktop purposes), can my old G4 Mac Mini be re-purposed ? It has DVI out - can this be used to drive HDMI ? It only has a stereo mini-jack out, but presumably I could get a USB sound card to give me optical output ? Has anyone tried this, or am I going to run into lip-sync errors ? Īssuming for a moment that it is a good solution, could I then feed the HDMI to the TV/Processor and use the Thunderbolt/DVI output to drive my regular desktop monitor ? Any pitfalls here ? The computer desk is about 12metres from the TV position, so a long HDMI cable should work in this case. Seems to have problems with DTS, and possibly also DD5.1 too ? Now this COULD be because I plugged the HDMI into my TV and used the optical audio out on my TV to feed the Surround Processor (I haven't upgraded to a processor with HDMI yet - but plan to soon).ĭoes anyone have any experience of using this Mac Mini as a HTPC ? Are there any areas that I am missing that may catch me out ? Can anyone confirm my analysis of the audio issues I saw ? Other than the audio (which I put down to my lack of an HDMI-enabled processor), it seems to be the perfect solution. It has an HDMI out on it anyway, so I just plugged it straight in. Seems I can run XBMC (or any number of other software solutions) on it, and get YouTube, iPlayer, web, etc on it as a bonus. Having got a lovely shiny Mac Mini recently (July 2011 model, I believe), I started to think about whether this would be a good way of getting what I want.

The v2 seems good, but only 720p - no 1080. The v3 is limited in that it seems you can't jailbreak it - so no XBMC or similar software, meaning the files you can play are limited. It plays almost any type of file I throw at it (including DVD ISOs) - but it doesn't want to do HD, has no HDMI, and not sure it will do DTS audio, etc. I got hold of an old XBOX some time ago, running XBMC - and it's great. I've been throwing around some ideas about a HTPC-type of device for a while now.
